 Rapid LNG action from Canada

“Japan, Korea and Taiwan want to see rapid action from Canada to enhance LNG export capacity.”

That’s from a new paper by Shannon Joseph, chair of Energy for a Secure Future Canada and a friend of our Alliance, written for the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.

She points out that Canada’s West Coast offers a significant trade advantage over the US Gulf Coast exports bound for Asia.

“But with pressure on potential energy customers to ‘buy American’ or face tariffs, Canada will need to act decisively if it wants to be an energy solution provider to the world. And JKT (Japan, Korea and Taiwan) should naturally place high on our list of preferred recipient markets.”

She concludes: “Our allies are waiting – let’s end the wait.”

Woodfibre LNG praises Squamish pact

Woodfibre LNG’s partnership with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) means “project decisions reflect Indigenous priorities and environmental stewardship.”

That’s from Woodfibre CEO Luke Schauerte (above), who told the Vancouver Board of Trade’s Indigenous Opportunities Forum: “Before you build a project, you need to build a relationship.”

Today, adds Woodfibre: “That commitment has resulted in a first-of-its-kind regulatory model, workforce initiatives, and business partnerships that set a new standard for how resource projects can and should be developed in Canada.”

BC gas and LNG are making a world mark

That headline was on our latest Alliance blog, and we added that they are turning BC into an energy powerhouse.

We quoted energy commentator Geoff Russ: “BC is set to become Canada’s top supplier of LNG to Asia and the Pacific, and First Nations are leading that transformation.”

And we went on to note: “The Haisla Nation aims to open its floating Cedar LNG project in 2028, making 3.3 million tonnes of LNG a year in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation. Construction is already under way.

“And the Nisga’a Nation (with Rockies LNG and Western LNG) hopes to begin construction soon, and to have the Ksi Lisims LNG project online in 2029, producing up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year.”
