LNG carriers meet rigorous safety standards
As LNG Canada points out: “LNG shipping has one of the best records in the shipping industry . . . without a single cargo loss since the first commercial cargo was shipped in 1964.”
And it continues: “All LNG carriers adhere to rigorous safety standards and requirements established through years of commercial LNG operations and help ensure the protection of the world’s waterways.”
Yet a scare-balloon launched by opponents of LNG in BC is that there are going to be hundreds of LNG carriers travelling through BC ocean waters.
Capitalizing on concerns about oil tankers, one opposition group sees future LNG carrier traffic along the southern BC coast as potentially numbering “in the realm of 800+ transits a year.”
Eight hundred transits a year? BC Ferries runs more than 185,000 transits a year — and those ferries don’t have tugs helping them to get safely to and from LNG terminals, and don’t have certified BC Coast Pilots on the bridge to keep progress safe.

Think tank welcomes our Karen Ogen
From the Macdonald-Laurier Institute: ‘We are excited to announce that Karen Ogen recently joined MLI as a Senior Fellow!’
The institute is Canada’s leading independent and nationally focused think tank, based in Ottawa. It is also the most cited and quoted think-tank in Canada’s parliament.
It hailed Karen, the CEO of our First Nations Natural Gas Alliance, as “working to advance responsible LNG and natural gas development that prioritizes the environment and First Nations engagement.”

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI) also carried a video interview with Crystal Smith, former chief councillor of the Haisla Nation, former chair of our Alliance, and now a strategic advisor to the Alliance. Smith was interviewed by Karen Restoule, MLI senior fellow and director of Indigenous affairs.

And Crystal Smith won online hugs, support, and praise as she spoke of six months of personal ‘lateral violence’ and ‘hell’ around LNG projects. But now the benefits are coming to her Haisla community.
