There was much interest in our latest update on LNG in BC, which noted that LNG Canada’s $40-billion plant will soon ship its first export cargo. The destination has not yet been named, but the plant is in final testing stages.

We also updated our 32,619 followers on social media on progress on four other LNG projects in BC: Woodfibre LNG, Cedar LNG, Ksi Lisims LNG, and FortisBC’s expansion of its Tilbury LNG plant and plans for a marine LNG dock on the Fraser River.

Cedar LNG is one of two BC projects with majority First Nations ownership. The Haisla Nation has begun preliminary construction of their floating LNG plant in their traditional territory and waters.

The Ksi Lisims LNG project, majority-owned by the Nisga’a Nation, is awaiting some decisions from the BC Environmental Assessment Office, and says it is on a steady path towards an FID (final investment decision) later this year.

Canada can be No. 1 in LNG for Asia

CEO François Poirier of TC Energy won big headlines for his Toronto speech in which he said: “I believe we can be the number one exporter of LNG to Asia.”

He told the Canadian Club that Canada needs to set a bold ambition. “I believe we can be the number one exporter of LNG to Asia. We have the supply, we have a transportation cost advantage, and the demand is there for the taking.

“Our political, business and Indigenous leaders need to unite in this ambition – and show the world Canada is back in business.”

Meanwhile, Heather Exner-Pirot of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute wrote in National Post that Canada should start acting like the energy superpower we are. And that includes exporting LNG and reviving the stalled Énergie Saguenay LNG plant in Quebec.

“Almost all our close allies in Asia and Europe are net importers of oil, gas and minerals. . . . We need to step in and provide a democratic supply for as long as they need it.”

And energy journalist Geoff Russ told National Post readers how Canada has a chance to dominate the Pacific on LNG: “Let’s take it.”

“Right now, natural gas is primed to become a signature Canadian export, but . . . this is a time for Ottawa to choose whether it will commit to LNG and give it a fast runway to completion, or choose to delay and risk failure.”

Natural gas affordable, reliable, important

The Canadian Gas Association issued a report on how natural gas is the fastest-growing energy choice amongst Canadians, and what we can do to make it stronger still.

Among its points:

  • “There is a pressing need for Canadian federal leadership in articulating a new and innovative vision for Canadian gas energy and its infrastructure.”
  • “Extending natural-gas infrastructure to rural and Indigenous regions improves affordability, supports local economies, and ensures energy reliability.”
  • “The public sentiment on gas energy remains positive. Recent public opinion research shows that 68% of Canadians believe natural gas is important to the country’s energy security.”
  • “Natural gas is the fastest-growing energy choice amongst Canadians (but) fragmented public policy and calls for banning natural gas use stand to hinder our Canadian advantage.”
