Canadian LNG to Europe now pushed

Three years ago, Justin Trudeau, then prime minister, declared that there has “never been a strong business case” for liquefied natural gas exports from Canada’s East Coast to Europe.

But now the new Mark Carney federal government is onside — and we have industry and governments looking at opportunities to send our LNG to Europe.

Fermeuse Energy has announced plans for a $15-billion LNG project off the coast of Newfoundland, and the New Brunswick government has approached Canadian pipeline operator TC Energy and Spanish energy firm Repsol to reopen talks on a proposed LNG export terminal at St. John’s.

Alaska LNG: Coming or crashing?

The proposed Alaska LNG project, if it happens, would be a blow to BC and Canada, as it would directly compete with BC LNG.

It would be the first US LNG-for-export plant on the West Coast, and thus undermine BC’s current advantage of being able to move LNG to Asia in as little as 10 days, compared with 24 days from US plants on the Gulf of Mexico.

President Donald Trump has announced a “joint venture in an Alaska Pipeline” with South Korea, and a similar joint venture with Japan. But the Asian parties he cites have not confirmed any such joint ventures.

So it’s not at all clear whether Trump’s statements mean contracts actually exist, or are simply political pie-in-the-sky announcements.

The longer Alaska LNG stays as pie in the sky the happier BC and Canada and our LNG producers will be.
