First Nations Natural Gas Alliance hails LNG Canada/MNT Investments equity option as “Indigenous LNG” in action — First Nations owning their future
The First Nations Natural Gas Alliance (FNNGA) today welcomed the landmark equity option agreement between LNG Canada and MNT Investments LP as a defining example of “Indigenous LNG” and of First Nations owning their future in Canada’s energy economy.
Under the agreement announced today, MNT Investments LP — a partnership of the economic development organizations of five First Nations neighbouring LNG Canada’s Kitimat operations (Gitga’at First Nation, Gitxaała Nation, Haisla Nation, Kitselas First Nation and Kitsumkalum) has the option to invest up to $1 billion (CAD) to acquire a majority equity ownership interest in the LNG storage tank planned for LNG Canada’s proposed Phase 2 expansion.
If completed, it would be one of the largest Indigenous ownership positions in major Canadian infrastructure and a significant Indigenous investment in Canada’s LNG sector.
“This is what Indigenous LNG looks like,” said Karen Ogen, CEO of the First Nations Natural Gas Alliance. “Today, Gitga’at, Gitxaała, Haisla, Kitselas and Kitsumkalum are stepping up as majority owners of world-class energy infrastructure. This is First Nations owning our future and is a powerful example of economic reconciliation.”
The Alliance, a collective of First Nations participating in and supportive of sustainable and responsible natural gas and LNG development in British Columbia, has long advanced the principle that Canadian LNG is Indigenous LNG — with First Nations as partners and owners across the upstream, midstream and downstream, and with Indigenous values shaping how the industry grows.
“Ownership changes everything,” said Ogen. “Jobs, training, procurement and community benefits matter, and they always will. But equity is different. Equity means a seat at the table for generations, revenue that funds our schools, our elders and our languages, and a say in the decisions that affect our lands and waters.
“The five Nations at the MNT table have shown every community in this country what genuine partnership can achieve.”
The equity option is conditional on LNG Canada’s Joint Venture Participants approving the Phase 2 expansion in Kitimat, in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, with a Final Investment Decision targeted by the end of 2026. LNG Canada and its partners have safely shipped more than 100 LNG cargoes since operations began on June 30, 2025.
